Aztec Labs Reintroduces Nyx Privacy Wallet on Enhanced Aztec Network
Aztec Labs has officially launched Nyx, a self-custodial privacy wallet, marking the return of its zk.money product after a three-year hiatus. The new wallet is built on an upgraded version of the Aztec Network, which features a zero-knowledge Layer 2 infrastructure that significantly enhances performance and reduces transaction costs by approximately 50%. This launch coincides with the Alpha V5 upgrade of the Aztec Network, which went live in July 2026 and boasts improvements such as more than double the speed of private transaction proving.
The original zk.money and its associated service, Aztec Connect, were discontinued in March 2023 due to concerns over centralized sequencers that compromised user trust. Instead of making temporary fixes, Aztec Labs opted to develop a fully decentralized privacy platform from the ground up, utilizing client-side zero-knowledge proofs and a new programming language called Noir, designed specifically for creating zero-knowledge circuits.
Nyx is the first application to leverage the capabilities of the Alpha V5 upgrade, which allows for end-to-end private execution directly on user devices. This means that transaction proofs are generated on users' phones or laptops, ensuring that no intermediary server has access to transaction details. The wallet also includes yield-earning features, appealing to users interested in decentralized finance (DeFi) without exposing their financial activities.
The relaunch of Nyx is part of a broader initiative to decentralize the Aztec Network, supported by the $AZTEC token, which offers governance rights and staking opportunities. Following a successful token sale that raised between $59 million and $61 million in December 2025, Aztec Network is now in the second stage of decentralization, with plans for private smart contract capabilities on Ethereum and cross-chain privacy integrations in the future.
