$270 Million Liquidated from Crypto Market in 24 Hours Amid Price Swings

In a significant downturn, approximately $270 million in leveraged positions were liquidated across major cryptocurrency exchanges in a 24-hour period, affecting tens of thousands of traders. Long positions, where traders bet on rising prices, were particularly hard hit, accounting for about 63% of the total liquidations. This event underscores the risks associated with trading on leverage in the volatile crypto market.

Liquidation data from exchanges such as Binance, Bybit, OKX, Hyperliquid, and Gate.io showed varying totals, with some estimates ranging from $210 million to as high as $428 million. The largest single liquidation was a $4.6 million position on the ETHUSDT trading pair. On days of high-volume liquidations, it is common for over 70,000 individual traders to face forced closures of their positions.

September 2026 has seen heightened liquidation activity, with daily volumes fluctuating between $351 million and $690 million. In comparison, a similar liquidation event in mid-August resulted in around $195 million being wiped out. Bitcoin's trading range of $75,000 to $87,000 has contributed to the volatility, as significant price movements can quickly trigger liquidations for traders using high leverage. The mechanics of these liquidations create a feedback loop, further amplifying price volatility in the market.
