Generation Z in the U.S. Begins Wealth Accumulation at Age 19, Survey Finds

The 2026 Wealth Survey conducted by U.S. Bank reveals that Generation Z in the United States starts accumulating wealth at an average age of 19, significantly earlier than previous generations. The survey, which included responses from 5,000 American adults aged 18 and older, indicates that this younger generation is actively engaging in wealth-building activities such as investing and saving for retirement six years earlier than Millennials, ten years earlier than Generation X, and thirteen years earlier than Baby Boomers.

Despite this early start, many in Generation Z express concerns about their financial progress. The survey found that 56% believe they are making the right financial decisions but still feel they have not reached their expected financial situation. Additionally, 62% report challenges in making financial progress, and nearly half have paused or are considering pausing their investments.

The survey also highlights a shift in investment preferences among younger generations. Approximately 62% of Generation Z and 61% of Millennials view the stock market as a more viable path to wealth compared to homeownership, contrasting with 51% of Generation X and 45% of Baby Boomers. Furthermore, about 47% of Generation Z rely on social media for financial information, with nearly half showing increased interest in cryptocurrency, although most still regard traditional investments as the best strategy for long-term financial goals.
