August CPI Report to Influence Federal Reserve's Rate Decision

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is set to release the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for August on September 11 at 8:30 AM Eastern Time. This report is particularly significant as it is the last major inflation data point the Federal Reserve will consider before its policy meeting on September 15-16, where officials will decide on a potential interest rate hike, the first since 2023.

Market analysts have noted that the recent Producer Price Index (PPI) report, which exceeded expectations, has increased the likelihood of a 25 basis point rate hike to over 70%, up from approximately 62%. The median forecasts from 17 banks surveyed indicate a headline CPI increase of 0.38% month-on-month, translating to a year-on-year rate of 3.4%, and a core CPI increase of 0.22% month-on-month, or 2.4% year-on-year. The tight clustering of core CPI estimates suggests limited potential for surprises in the underlying inflation trend.

Energy prices, particularly the recent surge in oil prices above $100 per barrel due to tensions in the Middle East, are expected to impact the headline CPI more than the core reading, which excludes food and energy costs. This divergence means that traders will likely analyze both figures separately, as a strong headline driven by energy prices could signal different implications for Fed policy compared to a core reading that reflects more persistent inflationary pressures.
