Bahraini fund to invest in power grids across US and Europe

Bahrain’s GFH Bank has raised capital through a sharia-compliant fund to invest in electricity grid infrastructure across North America and Europe.

The Power Systems Opportunities Fund will support the expansion and modernisation of power networks operated by US-based MacLean Power Systems and Ireland’s H&MV Engineering, the lender said in a statement.

MPS makes engineered products used to build, maintain, repair and upgrade electricity transmission, distribution and substation infrastructure. H&MV provides specialist high-voltage electrical engineering services worldwide for data centres, battery energy storage, utilities and renewables.

GFH’s focus on mission-critical power infrastructure reflects rising demand from artificial intelligence and data centres. The fund will take a “picks and shovels” approach, investing in the equipment and engineering needed to build, connect, maintain and modernise grids.

The $63 million investment comes as the International Energy Agency expects US and European data centre electricity consumption to rise by 240 terawatt-hours (TWh) and 45 TWh, respectively, by 2030 compared with 2024 levels – increases of 130 percent and 70 percent.

Hammad Younas, chief investment officer at GFH Bank, said power infrastructure was a high-conviction theme. AI, data centres and electrification were driving electricity demand higher and increasing the need to expand and modernise power networks.

GFH Bank manages more than $25 billion in assets and funds. It is listed on the Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait and Dubai stock exchanges.
