BOJ Deputy Governor Warns of Inflation Risks as Japan Approaches Target

Ryozo Himino, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Japan (BOJ), has expressed concerns regarding potential inflation risks as the country nears its long-sought inflation target of 2%. Himino noted that underlying inflation is close to this target and that medium to long-term inflation expectations are rising. Despite these developments, he emphasized that financial conditions remain accommodative and real interest rates are low, which could pose challenges if policy adjustments are delayed.

Himino's remarks highlight the necessity for the BOJ to act cautiously to avoid allowing inflation to escalate, which could negatively impact the economy. While he did not explicitly indicate an immediate need for a rate hike, he warned that postponing policy changes could lead to materialization of inflation risks. Market analysts currently predict a low likelihood of a rate adjustment during the BOJ's October meeting, but there is a 74% chance of a hike in December.

The comments from Himino reinforce the notion that the BOJ must remain vigilant in its approach to monetary policy. Although the October meeting may not yield significant changes, the potential for tightening in December remains a critical consideration for market participants, particularly in light of the ongoing inflationary pressures.
