ECB Official Highlights Consumer Cost Dynamics Amid Economic Resilience

Isabel Schnabel, a member of the European Central Bank (ECB), stated that high costs are being passed on to consumers more quickly in a resilient economy. This observation suggests that inflation pressures remain significant as businesses adapt to rising costs.

Schnabel noted that robust credit dynamics indicate that financial conditions are not yet restrictive, which could imply that current monetary policy is not sufficiently curbing demand. However, she also mentioned that the recent increase in global yields might have a more pronounced effect on the economy than previously anticipated, potentially alleviating some price pressures.

The ECB can afford to adopt a more gradual approach to returning inflation to its target if inflation expectations among households and businesses remain stable. The central question remains whether the rise in borrowing costs will begin to dampen demand or if the ongoing economic resilience will continue to allow cost increases to be transferred to consumers.
