European Markets Close Lower Amid Rising Yields and Walmart Earnings

European equities experienced a downturn as markets reacted to rising US Treasury yields and disappointing earnings from Walmart. The S&P 500 futures fell by 0.2%, while Nasdaq futures dropped by 0.4%, reflecting a cautious sentiment among investors. Walmart's earnings report indicated a potential pullback in consumer spending, raising concerns about the overall health of the retail sector following last week's retail sales data.

In the currency markets, the euro extended its gains against the dollar, reaching a three-month high of 1.1683 before settling lower. The dollar showed mixed performance, with the USD/JPY pair rising by 0.3% to 158.65. Meanwhile, US 10-year Treasury yields increased by 4 basis points to 4.694%, contributing to a slight recovery in the dollar after earlier lows.

Oil prices also surged, with WTI crude climbing 3.4% to $88.70, driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly between the US and Iran. This rise in oil prices coincided with a decline in precious metals, as gold prices fell by 1.1% to $4,469 after briefly surpassing $4,500 earlier in the day. The market remains on edge as inflation expectations continue to rise.
