The consumer packaged goods company behind Cheerios posted adjusted profit of $0.75 per share for its fiscal first quarter that concluded on Aug. 30. Wall Street analysts had projected $0.72, compared to adjusted earnings of $0.86 in the same period last year.

Revenue decreased 2.8% to $4.39 billion but still exceeded analyst expectations of $4.35 billion. The company attributed the revenue decline largely to the divestiture of its U.S. yogurt operations.

      Top-Line Growth Concerns Persist

Organic revenue, which excludes the impact of acquisitions and divestitures, remained essentially unchanged compared to the prior-year period. While this suggests some degree of stabilization, the company’s core business segment faces continued headwinds.

The North America Retail division experienced a 6.6% revenue decline to approximately $2.45 billion. Meanwhile, the International segment provided a bright spot with 4.5% growth to $794 million, and North America Pet sales held steady year-over-year.

Throughout the past year, General Mills has implemented strategic price reductions and enhanced product value propositions to address heightened consumer price sensitivity in the food category. Leadership has also launched innovative products targeting high-growth segments including protein-enriched foods, fiber-based offerings, snack categories, and premium pet nutrition.

Company executives have indicated that recent retail performance metrics show signs of improvement, with consumers demonstrating positive reception to several new product introductions. CEO Jeff Harmening characterized the beginning of fiscal 2027 as promising while recognizing that market conditions remain unpredictable.

Margins continue facing pressure. Adjusted gross margin contracted 90 basis points to 33.3% as elevated input costs partially offset the company’s efficiency initiatives.

      Fiscal 2027 Financial Outlook Unchanged

General Mills reaffirmed its fiscal 2027 projections, anticipating organic revenue performance ranging from a 1.5% contraction to 0.5% expansion. Adjusted earnings per share are projected to fall between $3.00 and $3.20.

The corporation also anticipates adjusted operating profit to decline between 8% and 13% on a constant currency basis. Leadership had previously confirmed these targets during the Barclays Global Consumer Staples Conference on Sept. 8.

Market participants are weighing quarterly results that surpassed expectations against a challenging longer-term equity performance. GIS has declined more than 11% over the trailing month and approximately 24% year to date, reflecting investor concerns regarding tepid demand and margin compression.

Primary risks include subdued consumer spending, elevated labor and raw material expenses, competitive pricing dynamics, and the potential for the company’s product innovation strategy to require more time than anticipated to drive revenue acceleration. While the earnings beat provides support, organic growth trends remain essentially flat.

Currently, investors appear cautiously optimistic that quarterly performance exceeded forecasts without triggering a guidance revision. The most recent development centers on General Mills’ commitment to its fiscal 2027 financial targets despite lower reported revenue and persistent softness in the North America Retail business.
