GoDaddy (GDDY) Stock Jumps 11% on Gen Digital Acquisition Rumors

      Key Takeaways

      • Financial Times reports Gen Digital has approached GoDaddy with a preliminary acquisition proposal.
      • Shares of GoDaddy surged up to 11% on Thursday, triggering a temporary volatility halt.
      • Gen Digital shares declined approximately 8% following the report.
      • Discussions remain preliminary with no certainty of reaching a final agreement.
      • Representatives from both firms have refused to provide comment on the speculation.

Shares of GoDaddy experienced a significant rally on Thursday, climbing as high as 11% after the Financial Times published a report indicating that Gen Digital has initiated preliminary discussions to acquire the web hosting giant. The sharp price movement triggered an automatic trading pause due to volatility.

Meanwhile, Gen Digital’s stock headed in the opposite direction, dropping roughly 8% during the trading session.

According to the Financial Times, Gen Digital submitted its initial proposal within the past few weeks. Sources indicate the negotiations are still in their infancy, with no assurance that a transaction will materialize.

Gen Digital operates as the parent company of cybersecurity brands including Norton 360, LifeLock, CCleaner, and ReputationDefender. The entity was established in 2022 following the combination of NortonLifeLock and Avast.

Official confirmation from either party remains absent. When contacted by Barron’s, a GoDaddy spokesperson stated the organization maintains a policy of not discussing M&A activity. Gen Digital similarly refused to provide commentary.

Strategic Rationale Behind the Potential Deal

GoDaddy manages approximately 81 million domain names globally. This represents nearly 20% of all domains registered across the world.

Beyond domains, the platform supports over 20 million small business owners, content creators, and independent entrepreneurs. For a cybersecurity-focused organization like Gen Digital, access to this extensive customer network creates opportunities to package antivirus software and identity theft protection alongside domain registration and website hosting offerings.

Gen Digital’s current market capitalization stands at approximately $15.7 billion. GoDaddy holds a valuation near $12.2 billion, meaning this acquisition would rank among the most substantial transactions in Gen Digital’s corporate timeline.

The Financial Times article did not disclose specific deal terms. No official pricing or transaction structure has been revealed publicly.

      GoDaddy’s Challenging Performance This Year

This acquisition speculation arrives as GoDaddy has faced headwinds, with shares declining roughly 15% year-to-date prior to Thursday’s surge. Part of the stock’s weakness stems from investor concerns that artificial intelligence-powered website builders might undermine GoDaddy’s proprietary AI solution, Airo.

Airo enables users to create websites and marketing assets using an AI-driven virtual assistant. Market participants have expressed doubts about whether competing AI platforms could draw customers away from GoDaddy’s offering.

However, not all analysts share this pessimistic view. Ken Wong from Oppenheimer expressed confidence in Airo’s performance last month, highlighting increased customer expenditure and successful product bundling strategies. He maintains a Perform rating on the shares.

Wong additionally emphasized that GoDaddy’s executive team has maintained disciplined expense management while delivering shareholder value through stock repurchase programs.

Shares of competitor Wix.com also experienced upward movement, rising over 2% on the acquisition news. Market observers interpret this as investor speculation that industry consolidation may expand beyond just GoDaddy.

At present, the situation remains fluid. No concrete details about the proposed transaction have been finalized, and both organizations continue to maintain public silence. Additional clarity will likely emerge only if negotiations advance sufficiently for either company to issue an official statement confirming or dismissing the deal.
