HSBC Raises Brent Crude Price Forecast Amid Ongoing Supply Risks

HSBC has revised its Brent crude price forecasts, increasing its 2026 outlook to $90 per barrel from $80 and its 2027 forecast to $85 from $65. The bank's analysts attribute this adjustment to a disrupted state of operations in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for oil, which has seen transit volumes stabilize at approximately 30 percent of pre-conflict levels since a US-Iran memorandum of understanding collapsed in July.

The bank's analysis indicates that oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz are expected to gradually recover, reaching around 8 million barrels per day by the end of 2026 and 9.5 million barrels per day by mid-2027. However, these figures remain significantly lower than the 19 to 20 million barrels per day that were transported prior to the conflict. HSBC emphasizes that the current market conditions suggest a tighter oil market will persist longer than previously anticipated, with a return to balance not expected until mid-2027.

HSBC also highlighted the importance of bypass pipelines in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which are projected to increase their contributions to total Gulf exports. These pipelines are expected to rise from just over 4 million barrels per day currently to 6.8 million by mid-2027, helping to mitigate the impact of reduced flows through the Strait of Hormuz. The bank has also raised its refining margin assumptions through 2028, citing factors such as constrained product exports and elevated costs as contributing to strong refining margins.
