IMF Urges Australia to Prepare for Further Interest Rate Hikes Amid Inflation Concerns

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has advised the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to be prepared for additional interest rate increases due to ongoing inflation pressures. This recommendation follows the IMF's annual consultations with Australian financial authorities, where it highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the current restrictiveness of monetary policy. The IMF's warning comes as fuel prices in Australia rise sharply, driven by a 35% increase in Brent crude oil prices since early August, which has been exacerbated by escalating tensions in the Middle East.

In its latest economic forecast, the IMF downgraded Australia's GDP growth projection to 1.9% for this year, with a further reduction to 1.6% anticipated in 2027. This adjustment reflects the increased likelihood of another rate hike by the RBA, which currently has a cash rate of 4.35%. Financial markets are estimating an 80% chance of a 25 basis point increase at the RBA's upcoming meeting on September 29, with some predictions suggesting the rate could reach 4.85% by early 2027.

The IMF also urged both federal and state governments in Australia to implement spending cuts to manage rising debt levels and combat inflation. While the fund expressed support for recent changes to investor tax policies proposed by the government, it cautioned against potential unintended consequences. IMF mission chief Paulo Medas noted that these tax adjustments could help improve housing affordability by creating more balanced investment incentives.
