Iran's President Advocates for Diplomacy Amidst Military Posturing at UN General Assembly
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing the country's need for nuclear energy while rejecting the pursuit of nuclear weapons. He stated that the nuclear issue cannot be resolved through military conflict and reiterated Iran's commitment to diplomatic negotiations. However, he asserted that Iran would not yield to military pressure and must maintain a strong defensive posture to protect its interests, particularly in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
During his speech, Pezeshkian highlighted Iran's stance on the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that the country cannot permit the waterway to be used for transporting weapons intended for use against it. He also condemned the recent attack on the Minab girls' school, which resulted in the deaths of innocent children, claiming that Iran does not target civilian populations.
The backdrop to Pezeshkian's remarks included tensions with the United States, where President Donald Trump had previously defended U.S. actions against Iran and hinted at the possibility of severe measures. Despite the heightened rhetoric, both leaders left open the potential for diplomatic engagement, with reports of positive discussions between U.S. officials and Iranian representatives occurring on the sidelines of the assembly. The situation remains fluid, with the Strait of Hormuz continuing to be a focal point of geopolitical uncertainty, particularly for global oil markets.
