New Zealand Manufacturing PMI Reaches 56.5, Marking 15 Months of Growth

New Zealand's manufacturing sector demonstrated significant growth in September, with the BNZ-BusinessNZ Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI) rising to 56.5 from 53.3 in August. This marks the 15th consecutive month that the index has remained above the neutral level of 50, indicating ongoing expansion. The latest reading is notably above the long-term average of 52.5 and is the highest since June 2021, excluding an unusually strong reading of 60.1 recorded that month.

The increase in the PMI was driven by improvements across several sub-indices, with finished stocks leading at 59.0 and deliveries at 58.8. Both production and new orders also showed strong growth, each reaching 57.0. Employment, while still the weakest component at 51.8, returned to expansion from a neutral position of 50.0 in August. BusinessNZ Director of Advocacy Catherine Beard highlighted the return to growth in employment as a positive sign for manufacturers, suggesting increased willingness to hire as the sector gains momentum heading into the final quarter of the year.

Despite the positive headline figures, the overall sentiment among manufacturers remains cautious. More than half of the comments from respondents were negative, with concerns about rising fuel prices and uncertainty surrounding the upcoming elections. BNZ Senior Economist Doug Steel noted that while the PMI reflects strong forward-looking components, persistent cost pressures and election-related uncertainties could impact investment and hiring decisions in the near future. The upcoming October survey will be crucial in determining whether this momentum can be sustained.
