Romanian F-16s Intercept Drones Over Black Sea Amid Rising Tensions

Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets shot down two drones over the country's territorial waters in the Black Sea on Saturday, according to the Romanian Defence Ministry. The intercepts occurred approximately 20 kilometers southeast of Sulina, with the first drone being downed shortly after it entered Romanian airspace at 14:59 GMT, followed by the second at 15:05 GMT.

The origin of the drones has not been disclosed, leaving the incident as a confirmed airspace violation without attribution to any specific country. This development follows earlier drone strikes on two chemical tankers near Romania's coast, highlighting increasing security risks to both commercial traffic and NATO airspace in the region.

Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu announced that the issue would be addressed at a North Atlantic Council meeting on Tuesday. The outcome of this meeting is anticipated to influence regional shipping dynamics, insurance costs, and overall European risk sentiment, as NATO allies consider whether these incidents are isolated or indicative of a broader threat in the Black Sea.
