Shares of Starbucks (SBUX) gained ground following CEO Brian Niccol’s announcement of comprehensive café renovation plans. The stock started Thursday trading at $100.04 and has advanced 21% year-over-year, trading within a 52-week band of $77.99 to $110.51.
During a recent media appearance, Niccol characterized the café transformation initiative as the next phase of the “Back to Starbucks” recovery blueprint, now entering its second year. The initiative aims to enhance the in-store experience and reconnect customers with the elements that originally attracted them to the brand.
Over the preceding nine months, the coffee giant has finished renovating more than 1,000 locations. The company has scheduled thousands of additional upgrades throughout the coming fiscal year across Starbucks‘ network of 40,990 stores worldwide, which includes nearly 17,000 U.S. locations.
The renovations focus primarily on aesthetic enhancements rather than major structural modifications. According to Niccol, the updates emphasize improvements such as expanded seating arrangements and softer ambient lighting designed to create a more inviting atmosphere.
Recovery Strategy Shows Progress
Recent financial performance validates the approach. Starbucks reported quarterly results on July 29 showing earnings per share of $0.85, exceeding the consensus forecast of $0.66 by $0.19. Total revenue reached $9.32 billion, topping analyst projections of $9.17 billion.
Comparable store sales climbed 7.9%, powered by robust U.S. performance. While revenue declined 1.4% compared to the prior year period, the earnings beat indicates the turnaround strategy is gaining momentum.
For fiscal 2026, Starbucks established EPS guidance between $2.55 and $2.65. The average analyst estimate stands at $2.64 EPS for the full year, aligning closely with company projections.
Wall Street Maintains Cautious Stance
Analysts remain divided on the stock’s prospects. According to MarketBeat data, SBUX holds a consensus “Hold” rating with an average target price of $110.30. This target implies approximately 10% potential appreciation from Thursday’s opening price.
DA Davidson adjusted its price target upward from $102 to $110 in late July while maintaining a neutral stance. Citigroup increased its target from $108 to $112, also with a neutral rating. Stephens initiated coverage with an overweight recommendation in May. Conversely, Bernstein downgraded SBUX from outperform to market perform in early August.
TipRanks data presents a somewhat more bullish outlook, showing 12 Buy ratings and eight Hold ratings among 20 covering analysts, with an average target of $119, suggesting 19% upside potential.
Among institutional investors, National Pension Service acquired 37,412 shares during Q2, expanding its position by 1.4% to 2,795,886 shares valued at approximately $285.7 million. Institutional ownership accounts for 72.29% of outstanding shares.
CEO Brady Brewer divested 2,229 shares on September 4 at an average price of $105.60 through a pre-established Rule 10b5-1 plan, totaling $235,382 in value.
