Syria to boost agriculture with $175m from World Bank

Syria has launched a project to increase agricultural output over the next six years, funded by $175 million from the World Bank.

The Star programme aims to support crop and livestock production, agricultural co-operatives and private-sector participation, the state-run Sana news agency reported.

Project director Ahmad Al Ahmad said it would rehabilitate seed cleaning and treatment centres, storage facilities and provide improved, drought-resistant varieties.

The funding is intended to help farmers and co-operatives to implement best agricultural practices and organic certification to drive exports. It will also support three drought-hit provinces – Hasaka, Raqqa and Deir Ezzor – due to their importance to wheat, barley and livestock production.

Syria’s agriculture ministry and the World Bank are exploring a more comprehensive package for eastern Syria, the official said.

In April, Damascus secured a $200 million grant from the World Bank to upgrade its railway infrastructure and support economic recovery.

President Ahmed Al Sharaa announced in March that the 2026 budget was set at about $10.5 billion, nearly triple last year’s level. He said GDP is estimated to reach $60 billion to $65 billion this year, adding that the economy could return to 2010 levels and improve services.
