Trump and Xi Discuss Trade and Technology During White House Meeting

President Donald Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House as part of Xi's three-day state visit to the United States. The leaders engaged in discussions covering a range of topics, including trade relations, technology, Taiwan, and the ongoing conflict with Iran. While the meeting aimed to foster cooperation, no immediate outcomes were anticipated from the talks.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the United States and China had agreed to extend their existing trade agreement, known as the Busan agreement, through January 10. This extension is expected to mitigate the risk of renewed tariff escalations. However, the summit's success will depend on whether the leaders can achieve substantive agreements, such as improved access to Chinese rare earth materials, advancements in agricultural purchases, or a broader trade deal.

Technology emerged as a critical focus, with discussions likely to include artificial intelligence and U.S. restrictions on advanced technology exports. Investors are particularly interested in any agreements regarding cooperation on AI and potential changes to export controls that could impact technology companies. The sensitive issue of Taiwan was also on the agenda, with Xi expected to address U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, especially in light of reports that a new arms package has been delayed. Additionally, the leaders may explore China's economic ties with Iran and potential avenues for easing tensions in that region.
