U.S. Energy Department Authorizes PJM to Manage Backup Generation Amid Blackout Risks

The U.S. Department of Energy has granted authorization to the PJM Interconnection to direct backup generation resources in response to anticipated blackout risks due to extreme heat. This measure is aimed at securing the reliability of the electricity grid serving the Mid-Atlantic region during the period of September 17-18, 2026.

PJM Interconnection, which coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in 13 states and the District of Columbia, will utilize this authority to ensure that sufficient power supply is available to meet demand. The decision comes as temperatures soar, raising concerns about the potential for widespread power outages in the area.
