US Fiscal Year 2026 Budget Deficit Reaches Largest Level in Five Years

The United States recorded a budget deficit of $1.992 trillion for fiscal year 2026, marking the largest shortfall in five years. This figure represents an increase from the $1.775 trillion deficit reported in fiscal year 2025. The significant rise in the deficit is largely attributed to a record $1.36 trillion in gross interest on the national debt, which rose by $144 billion, or 12%, compared to the previous year.

In September 2025, the U.S. Treasury reported a surplus of $198 billion, with total outlays reaching $585 billion, up from $346 billion a year earlier. Meanwhile, total receipts amounted to $558 billion, slightly higher than the $544 billion recorded in the same month the previous year. The monthly transition from a surplus to a deficit was driven by a substantial increase in outlays, which surged by $239 billion year-over-year, while receipts only grew by 2.6%.

Customs receipts also played a notable role in the financial report, with gross customs receipts at $25.27 billion. However, refunds totaling $19.36 billion consumed 77% of this amount, resulting in net customs receipts of just $5.91 billion. As the U.S. Treasury continues to manage its debt amid rising interest rates, the fiscal outlook remains challenging, with concerns about future economic growth and sustainability.
