US Stock Markets Open on Columbus Day Amid Bond Market Closure

On October 12, 2026, the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will operate during regular hours for Columbus Day, which is also recognized as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. However, the US bond market will be closed, creating a split trading environment that may lead to increased volatility due to thinner liquidity and fewer reference points for traders.

The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association has recommended a full closure of US dollar-denominated fixed income trading, affecting the cash Treasury market in the US, UK, and Japan. With US banks and federal offices closed, no major federal economic data will be released, further contributing to the lighter trading conditions.

The closure coincides with holidays in Japan and Canada, where markets will also be shut, resulting in reduced global liquidity. Traders are expected to be cautious, particularly with ongoing tensions related to Iran, which could influence oil prices and other markets. Normal trading is set to resume across all US markets on October 13, 2026, when bond traders will need to process any significant developments from the long weekend.
