Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Doubles Down on Alphabet (GOOGL): Time to Follow?
Key Takeaways
- Shares of GOOGL started Wednesday’s session at $344.17, positioned beneath the 50-day moving average of $352.87
- Google Cloud Platform delivered $24.8 billion in second-quarter revenue, representing an 82% surge from the prior year
- Second-quarter earnings per share reached $9.11, significantly exceeding the analyst consensus of $2.89; total revenue touched $119.80 billion
- Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway expanded its GOOGL position by 83% during Q2, accumulating approximately 106 million shares valued near $37 billion
- Wall Street analysts maintain a “Buy” rating with an average price objective of $419.86
Wednesday’s opening bell saw Alphabet shares priced at $344.17, trading beneath the 50-day moving average of $352.87 while maintaining a position above the 200-day line at $341.28. August has proven lackluster for the stock, with most of the weakness tied directly to capital expenditure concerns.
When Alphabet disclosed plans to expand its AI infrastructure spending from $180 billion to $205 billion during the second-quarter earnings announcement, investors grew anxious. Worries about excessive spending have weighed on shares, despite fundamentally robust operational performance.
The Q2 financial results themselves were impressive. Alphabet delivered earnings per share of $9.11, substantially exceeding the $2.89 Wall Street projection. Total revenue reached $119.80 billion, surpassing the $117.07 billion forecast. The company posted a net margin of 54.77% and return on equity of 51.32%.
Cloud Division Emerges as Major Growth Driver
Google Cloud Platform delivered exceptional performance. GCP generated $24.8 billion in second-quarter revenue, marking an 82% year-over-year increase. The company has restructured enterprise agreements to enable customers to leverage Gemini for AI model experimentation, with those same customers now purchasing Gemini access and specialized chips as integrated components of their operational infrastructure.
This represents a strategic transformation. Google has successfully converted its AI capabilities into a profitable software offering rather than merely a research initiative. The Cloud division and Gemini platform are creating synergistic revenue opportunities.
Institutional capital has been flowing into the stock. Nolet Wealth Management expanded its GOOGL holdings by 89.9% during Q2, purchasing 2,475 additional shares for a total of 5,228, representing approximately $1.87 million. Sequoia Financial Advisors acquired 48,805 shares in the quarter, elevating its position to 485,486. Institutional investors and hedge funds collectively control 40.03% of outstanding shares.
The Buffett Factor Carries Significance
The most substantial institutional transaction originated from Berkshire Hathaway. Warren Buffett revealed an 83% expansion of Berkshire’s GOOGL holdings in Q2, purchasing approximately 48 million shares to achieve a total position of roughly 106 million shares, currently worth around $37 billion. Buffett personally initiated the investment, highlighting robust cash flow generation and compelling valuation metrics.
Additional prominent investors have increased their exposure. David Tepper, Stanley Druckenmiller, and Seth Klarman all disclosed new positions or expanded existing holdings in GOOGL during the reporting period.
Analyst coverage remains constructive. Needham maintains a $450 price objective, China Renaissance elevated its target to $485 with a “Buy” recommendation, and HSBC carries a “Buy” rating with a $420 target. The consensus view among 54 covering analysts stands at “Buy” with an average price target of $419.86, representing approximately 22% upside from current trading levels.
The company also declared a quarterly dividend of $0.22 per share, scheduled for September 14th distribution to shareholders of record as of September 7th. The annualized dividend yield calculates to 0.3%.
Regarding potential concerns, Pomerantz LLP has initiated an investor investigation into Alphabet, though no determinations or allegations of misconduct have been made public. Insider activity showed John Kent Walker selling 8,998 shares at $349.29 on June 29th, trimming his stake by 10.68%.
The 52-week price range extends from $196.60 to $408.61, positioning the current $344.17 price level considerably below the analyst consensus target.
