Bitcoin Experiences Significant Drop Amid Liquidation of Long Positions

On October 6, 2026, Bitcoin experienced a sharp decline, falling nearly $2,000 in just 20 minutes, reaching a low of $67,895. This marked its lowest level since April of this year, as approximately $400 million in leveraged long positions were liquidated during the selloff. The rapid drop, which represented a more than 5% intraday decrease, was primarily driven by a cascade of liquidations in the cryptocurrency market.

Data from Coinglass revealed that about $394 million in positions were liquidated within an hour, with around $384 million stemming from long positions, where traders had bet on rising prices. Bitcoin traders bore the brunt of the losses, with approximately $209 million liquidated. Ethereum, Solana, and XRP also saw significant liquidations, totaling around $87 million, $27 million, and $11 million respectively. Over a 24-hour period, total liquidations across the market reached approximately $1.02 billion, predominantly affecting long positions.

The selloff was triggered by a technical breakdown as Bitcoin fell below key support levels, which had previously attracted buyers. Additionally, a small sale by Strategy, a company known for being a major corporate holder of Bitcoin, contributed to the negative sentiment. The company sold 32 BTC, valued at about $2.5 million, to fund dividend payments. Broader macroeconomic factors, including a shift towards AI-focused equities and rising energy prices, also played a role in the market's downturn.

This incident highlights the fragility of leveraged positions in the cryptocurrency market, where forced liquidations can exacerbate price declines. As traders assess the aftermath, the focus will be on whether Bitcoin can regain its lost support levels or if these levels will now act as resistance.
