Canadian Banks Launch Joint Tokenized Deposit Program

Six major banks in Canada have announced the launch of a joint initiative to explore a tokenized Canadian dollar deposit system. This program aims to enhance the efficiency of fund transfers between financial institutions and to establish connections with other digital asset initiatives. The participating banks include the Bank of Montreal, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, Scotiabank, and Toronto-Dominion Bank Group, with the potential for additional banks to join in the future.

The initial phase of the project will focus on facilitating the transfer of tokenized deposits among the participating banks. The banks stated that this phase is designed to promote the efficient circulation of tokenized deposits within the Canadian financial system, with a long-term vision of integrating with other emerging digital asset programs. Tokenized deposits are digital representations of funds already held by banks, allowing for 24/7 programmable payments within a regulated environment, distinguishing them from independent stablecoins issued by cryptocurrency firms.

This initiative is part of a broader trend among global banks to adopt blockchain technology for deposit systems. In the United States, regional banks are developing a shared tokenized deposit network, while major institutions like JPMorgan, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo have introduced their own products. Additionally, Swift has begun testing cross-border payments for tokenized deposits. Earlier this year, the Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, and Toronto-Dominion Bank successfully completed Project Samara, which involved issuing and trading CAD 100 million in bonds on a distributed ledger.
