China May Permit ByteDance and Alibaba to Acquire Nvidia Chips
The Chinese government has indicated it may allow domestic companies, including ByteDance and Alibaba, to purchase high-end chips from Nvidia, specifically the RTX PRO 5500 model. This development follows a request from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology for these companies to outline their plans for acquiring the chips, as reported by The Information, which cited two informed sources.
Industry executives believe that the RTX PRO 5500 could potentially circumvent existing U.S. export restrictions. However, Reuters has noted that it could not independently verify the claims regarding the government's intentions. A spokesperson for Nvidia stated that U.S. companies remain bound by outdated export controls, alongside China's own import restrictions on U.S. products, which include gaming products released nearly five years ago.
As of now, neither ByteDance nor Alibaba has responded to inquiries regarding this matter, and attempts to reach the Chinese government for comment have also been unsuccessful.
