United Nations Emphasizes Bitcoin's Role in Financial Inclusion at Digital Cooperation Event

At the United Nations Digital Cooperation Day 2026, held on September 21 in New York, a dedicated panel discussed the potential of Bitcoin and blockchain technology as tools for financial inclusion and sustainable development in developing nations. The event took place during the UN General Assembly High-Level Week, highlighting the importance of digital assets in creating self-sustaining economic systems rather than relying on traditional aid.

The panel, titled 'Blockchain and the Tokenized Future: Sovereign Choices and Safeguards for Next-Gen DPI,' featured Jeremy Almond, CEO of Paystand, and Bilal Bin Saqib, Chairman of Pakistan’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority. They argued that Bitcoin and tokenized assets could serve as digital public infrastructure, empowering countries to make independent economic choices.

Almond emphasized Bitcoin's potential to help achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, advocating for economic agency over dependency on philanthropy. Bin Saqib's participation underscored Pakistan's push for global regulations on digital assets, linking this advocacy to sustainable development objectives, particularly in a country with significant banking challenges in rural areas.

This event builds on previous UN engagements in 2026, including discussions on legal frameworks for digital assets by the Bitcoin Policy Institute. While the UN has not endorsed Bitcoin as a reserve asset, the positive framing of Bitcoin in relation to financial inclusion for the Global South marks a significant shift in institutional attitudes towards cryptocurrency.
