BIS Study Highlights Variability in Bitcoin Transaction Estimates

A recent working paper from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has revealed significant discrepancies in Bitcoin transaction estimates, indicating that common metrics used in the cryptocurrency industry may be unreliable. The study analyzed nearly 100 billion blockchain records across Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tron, concluding that onchain indicators should be viewed as rough approximations rather than precise economic metrics.

Central to the findings is the issue of unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs), which can dramatically affect reported Bitcoin transfer volumes. The researchers found that different methods of accounting for UTXOs can lead to variations in transaction values by as much as six times. This discrepancy raises critical questions about the data infrastructure supporting the multi-trillion-dollar cryptocurrency market.

The study also examined the complexity of Ethereum's ecosystem, which includes approximately 13 million active contracts. It noted that distinguishing meaningful economic activity from automated interactions and bot traffic is challenging. Furthermore, the use of stablecoins varies significantly across different blockchain platforms, with Ethereum primarily utilizing them within smart contracts, while Tron sees them used more for straightforward transfers.

The BIS emphasizes the need for improved methodologies in analyzing onchain data, suggesting that market analysts and data providers should be more transparent about their approaches. The findings call for standardization in the crypto data industry to ensure that metrics accurately reflect the underlying economic activity.
