Ethereum Aims to Cut Final Confirmation Time to 8-32 Seconds in Five Years
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, announced ambitious plans to reduce the final confirmation time for transactions on the Ethereum blockchain to between 8 and 32 seconds within the next five years. This announcement was made during his opening speech at the 2026 Shanghai Blockchain Week, where he highlighted the rapid advancements in cryptographic technologies such as Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) and obfuscation techniques.
Buterin emphasized a shift in blockchain capabilities, moving from merely determining asset transfers to enabling programmatic control over information visibility. He referenced the FOCIL proposal (EIP-7805), which aims to enhance transaction validation by having 16 validators collaboratively provide a list of transactions. This approach is designed to mitigate the risk of censorship or delays by individual block builders.
The Ethereum network is expected to see increased parallel computations on user devices, memory pools, and during the block building process. These developments are part of a broader strategy to enhance the efficiency and speed of the Ethereum blockchain, aligning with the evolving needs of its user base.
