DeFi Founders Discuss Competition at TOKEN2049 in Singapore

During the TOKEN2049 conference held in Singapore on October 7-8, 2026, founders from three prominent decentralized finance (DeFi) projects shared their perspectives on competition in the sector. Stani Kulechov of Aave identified traditional banks as the primary rivals, framing Aave's mission as a challenge to conventional finance rather than to other DeFi platforms. Kulechov emphasized Aave's strategy to expand its lending operations through real-world assets and tokenized assets, aiming for a future where crypto lending surpasses traditional borrowing by 2027.

In contrast, Guy Young, founder of Ethena, pinpointed Circle, a major stablecoin issuer, as his main competitor. Ethena's flagship product, the USDe stablecoin, has seen significant growth, reaching an estimated supply of $15 billion. Young's focus on competing with established stablecoin players highlights the intense market dynamics within the DeFi space.

Jeff Yan, CEO of Hyperliquid, took a different stance, stating that his project does not perceive any competitors. Yan led a session at the conference titled 'Hyperliquid: Rebuilding Finance from First Principles,' indicating a unique approach to DeFi that does not align with traditional competitive frameworks. As of mid-October 2026, Hyperliquid's HYPE token was trading between $80 and $81, with a market capitalization of around $18 billion, while Ethena's ENA token was valued at approximately $0.21, reflecting a market cap of about $2.8 billion.

The differing views on competition among these DeFi leaders underscore the diverse strategies within the industry. Aave's focus on tokenized lending, Ethena's emphasis on stablecoin market share, and Hyperliquid's innovative derivatives infrastructure represent distinct approaches to navigating the evolving financial landscape. As regulatory frameworks develop, particularly concerning real-world assets, the competition dynamics in DeFi are likely to shift further.
