Injective Proposes Fixed Gas Fees to Enhance Predictability in DeFi Trading Costs

Injective, a decentralized finance (DeFi) focused Layer-1 blockchain, is advancing a governance proposal aimed at establishing fixed gas fees for transactions within its exchange module. This initiative seeks to provide traders with clarity on transaction costs prior to execution. Currently, the gas fees associated with transactions fluctuate based on the computational requirements of each action, but the proposed changes would implement a flat fee structure for specific actions such as order placements, cancellations, and subaccount transfers.

The proposal is already operational on Injective's testnet and awaits a governance vote before being implemented on the mainnet. For instance, placing a limit order on a derivatives market would incur a fixed gas fee of 330,000 gas units, allowing traders to anticipate costs with certainty. While the fixed pricing model aims to simplify cost management for traders, it retains mechanisms to prevent network spam, ensuring that excessive junk orders still incur a cost.

Injective's current minimum gas price is set at 160,000,000 INJ units, translating to typical transaction fees of approximately $0.0003. The network boasts impressive performance metrics, including average block times of 600 to 650 milliseconds and a throughput of 25,000 transactions per second, utilizing the Tendermint consensus engine, now known as CometBFT. The governance process for implementing these changes involves staked INJ token holders voting on proposals, with the fixed gas values remaining on the testnet until approved. This development is particularly beneficial for high-frequency traders and market makers, as it simplifies their cost modeling by eliminating variable fees.
