Fogo Mainnet Experiences 46-Hour Downtime Following Token Theft

Fogo's mainnet has been non-operational for approximately 46 hours due to a security breach that resulted in the theft of 4 million FOGO tokens, representing about 10.3% of the circulating supply. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, prompting the Fogo Foundation to initially claim that the blockchain itself was unaffected. However, 15 hours later, the network was actively paused to implement measures to restrict access to compromised addresses through an upgrade.

Currently, the Fogo official explorer indicates that the last block produced was 718,525,971, and the RPC endpoint is returning a 502 error. The total value locked (TVL) on-chain, as tracked by DefiLlama, has remained stagnant at $987,000 for three days. The downtime is a result of Fogo's validator design, which involves a council of seven voting validators that allows for quick coordination to pause operations and blacklist affected addresses.

In response to the incident, cryptocurrency exchanges KuCoin and Gate have suspended FOGO deposits and withdrawals while continuing to allow trading, which has seen a 24-hour spot trading volume of approximately $2.3 million. Additionally, a fraudulent Twitter account impersonating the Fogo Foundation attempted to mislead users by posting a false compensation voting link, prompting officials to advise the community to rely solely on official communications for updates.

Fogo is the second blockchain network to pause operations over the weekend, following Cronos, which rolled back its state due to an attack on the Tectonic lending protocol. The Fogo Foundation has yet to provide further details regarding the attack, potential compensation for affected users, or a timeline for restarting the mainnet.
