SMBC Nikko Securities Partners with Uniswap and Others to Create DeFi Gateway for Japanese Investors
On October 2, 2026, SMBC Nikko Securities announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to develop a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform named 'DeFi Gateway' tailored for Japanese investors. The initiative involves collaboration with several notable participants, including blockchain development firm Nethermind, Uniswap Labs, the Nyx Foundation, and Coinbase Technologies, which operates the Ethereum Layer 2 network Base.
The DeFi Gateway project aims to establish a liquidity provision protocol and a proprietary liquidity pool that adheres to Japanese laws and regulations, with a target completion date set for mid-2027. Key components of the project include the creation of a 'proxy vault' featuring verifiable AI and a user-friendly interface, the implementation of Uniswap v4's Hooks feature to construct a compliant liquidity pool framework with built-in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing measures, and the development of asset management strategies that encompass digital assets like stablecoins and real-world assets.
SMBC Nikko Securities will lead communication with regulatory agencies and provide expertise in compliance, risk modeling, and portfolio management, while Nethermind will focus on the technical aspects, including AI strategy, smart contract security, and automated market making. This collaboration marks a significant step towards integrating DeFi solutions within the regulatory framework of Japan.
