Stripe Adopts Open USD as Default Stablecoin for Business Transactions

Stripe has officially designated Open USD (OUSD) as its default stablecoin for business payments, marking a significant shift in the payments landscape. OUSD is a product of Open Standard, a consortium comprising over 200 companies, including major players such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Coinbase. This collaborative effort aims to create a stablecoin that shares reserve earnings among its partners, contrasting with the traditional model where profits are retained by a single issuer.

Launched on September 30, 2026, OUSD is issued by Bridge, a subsidiary of Stripe. Each token is designed to maintain a value equivalent to one US dollar, backed by reserves held with financial institutions including BlackRock, Lead Bank, and BNY Mellon. Monthly attestations are provided to verify the existence of these reserves, ensuring transparency for users.

The introduction of OUSD is accompanied by several features tailored for business users, such as zero-fee minting and redemption, no volume caps on transactions, and a profit-sharing model that redistributes most reserve earnings back to consortium partners. OUSD is also multichain compatible, operating on platforms like Base, Ethereum, Solana, and Tempo, with liquidity available on exchanges including Coinbase, Kraken, and Uniswap.

By making OUSD the default stablecoin, Stripe enhances its position in the evolving digital payments sector, facilitating cross-border transactions and institutional trading. This strategic move underscores Stripe's commitment to leveraging its infrastructure to support a collaborative approach to stablecoin adoption, rather than promoting a proprietary solution.
