Cardano Entered Brazil’s Oil Sector: Petrobras Tests Blockchain for Fuel

      • Petrobras is testing Cardano to track cleaner fuels.
      • The Brazilian oil company chose the blockchain to prevent double counting of emissions reductions.
      • It has also previously explored blockchain in a bitcoin mining and tokenization project.

Brazil’s state-owned oil and gas company Petrobras has begun testing the Cardano blockchain in two research projects aimed at tracking data on jet fuel and diesel, CoinDesk reports.

The technology will be used to verify the origin of a fuel’s environmental benefits, prevent double counting of emissions reductions, and track fuel across different stages of its life cycle.

Cardano Will Help Track Fuel’s Environmental Benefits

One project focuses on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) — an alternative to conventional jet fuel with a lower carbon footprint. The other covers Diesel R — Petrobras’ diesel that is partially made from renewable feedstocks, including vegetable oils and animal fats.

According to Frederik Gregaard, Cardano Foundation CEO, Brazil is already actively using Cardano across the public and industrial sectors.

“Brazil has been one of the most consistent adopters of Cardano, from SERPRO in government to SENAI in industry. It’s great to see Petrobras, one of the largest firms in the region, continue to see value in on-chain provenance and traceability,” he said.

Previously, in September 2025, the Cardano Foundation presented the next stage of its roadmap, focused on six areas, including DeFi, Web3, governance decentralization, and stronger marketing.

In the jet fuel project, Cardano will record the origin of the environmental benefit, its recipient, and the moment it is used. This is meant to prevent situations where the same emissions reduction is counted by multiple companies.

A passenger will be able to specify the departure and arrival airports, calculate the corresponding fuel benefit, and receive a certificate linked to the original fuel certificate.

      Blockchain Will Trace Diesel’s Path

The second project involves recording data at every stage of Diesel R production, transportation, and use. This will make it possible to build a history of the fuel’s movement and potentially simplify companies’ Scope 3 reporting — indirect emissions across supply chains and among customers.

Both projects remain in the research phase for now. The diesel model is described as proposed, and Petrobras has not disclosed the volumes of fuel the systems will cover or the timeline for scaling them.

As a reminder, Petrobras has already explored blockchain and cryptocurrency capabilities as part of a bitcoin mining and tokenization project. The company also studied using the technology to streamline business processes and transition to low-carbon solutions.

This month, Cardano also joined x402 — a payment standard that allows apps and AI agents to pay for data or compute services directly at the point of use. The initial software for processing such payments has already been tested on the Cardano testnet, but its commercial use on the mainnet has not yet been demonstrated.
