Bloomberg – Bitcoin Leads Crypto Back Above $3 Trillion as Risky Bets Grow

Crypto markets have reclaimed $3 trillion in value as institutional buyers return, but leverage is building faster than spot demand—a structural warning that traders are taking seriously. Open interest in perpetual futures has hit an 11-month high of nearly $160 billion, yet the inflows fueling the rally haven’t kept pace, creating what QCP Group’s Caleb Lin calls a reflexive market where even modest price moves can trigger cascading liquidations.

The distinction matters: rising derivative open interest alongside healthy spot demand is normal market behavior, but when leverage accelerates ahead, the conditions shift dramatically in either direction. More than $920 million in bearish positions have already been liquidated, while long-side leverage building against thin spot sets up the same reversal conditions in reverse.

For now, institutional ETF inflows are supporting the upside, but the sustainability of the rally hinges on whether spot demand can replace forced covering when deleveraging begins. Traders remain skeptical—short squeezes produce price, not holders.
