Tourists Misled by AI-Generated Information Descend on Nonexistent Romanian Festival

Over the weekend of September 4-6, hundreds of tourists arrived in the Romanian commune of Jurilovca, expecting to participate in the Lipovenian Borscht Festival, a cultural event that has not taken place since 2025. The festival, known for its traditional fish soup and folk performances, was promoted by travel agencies and confirmed by AI tools, leading to significant confusion among visitors.

Mayor Eugen Ion of Jurilovca clarified that the festival had been suspended due to budget constraints and that no preparations were made for a 2026 edition. Despite this, travel agencies sold tickets and organized trips based on outdated promotional materials, without verifying the event's status with local authorities.

The situation escalated as tourists arrived to find no festival activities, prompting the mayor to urge travelers to verify information through official channels. He criticized the travel agencies for failing to conduct basic checks, which could have easily prevented the influx of misled visitors.
