Ava Labs Investigates Backup Cryptography Amid AI Security Concerns

Emin Gün Sirer, founder and CEO of Ava Labs, announced on October 9, 2026, that the company is exploring backup cryptography options as a precaution against potential vulnerabilities posed by artificial intelligence (AI). Sirer emphasized that the more immediate threat lies in AI exploiting software bugs rather than breaking the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA), which secures most cryptocurrency transactions. He stated, "We will see AI exploiting system-level bugs long before ECDSA goes away," highlighting the importance of focusing on the integrity of blockchain software and libraries.

Ava Labs, the company behind the Avalanche blockchain, primarily relies on ECDSA for transaction authorization, specifically using a variant known as secp256k1. Despite downplaying the immediate risks to ECDSA, Sirer revealed that Ava Labs is considering a proposal for a "cryptographic recovery mode" from Haseeb Qureshi, which would introduce an alternative cryptosystem to safeguard users in the event of ECDSA failure. Additionally, an internal team is investigating hash-based approaches to enhance security against AI vulnerabilities.

The discussions around cryptographic safety have historically centered on the threats posed by quantum computing. However, Sirer’s recent comments suggest a shift in focus towards the vulnerabilities present in everyday code. He noted that any credible threat to ECDSA would have implications beyond Avalanche, affecting a significant portion of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. As such, the industry may need to coordinate efforts to address potential weaknesses in the cryptographic foundations that underpin many blockchain networks.
