U.S. Senate to Vote on CLARITY Act Amid Bipartisan Support Efforts
The U.S. Senate is set to conduct a significant procedural vote on the CLARITY Act on September 15, 2026, marking a pivotal moment for the cryptocurrency industry. Faryar Shirzad, policy chief at Coinbase Global Inc., expressed cautious optimism regarding the bill's potential to advance, highlighting years of effort to build bipartisan support for comprehensive crypto regulation.
Shirzad outlined two possible outcomes for the vote: the bill could either fall short of the necessary 60 votes or gain enough Democratic support to encourage further bipartisan backing. He noted that the support of all 53 Senate Republicans is not guaranteed, which could complicate the voting dynamics. Key issues, including provisions related to decentralized finance (DeFi) and ethics concerns surrounding former President Donald Trump's crypto interests, remain contentious points in the discussions.
Should the CLARITY Act fail to pass, Shirzad indicated that regulatory agencies would still pursue over 100 rules to implement a framework for the crypto industry. He emphasized that the evolution of cryptocurrency would continue, with trends such as tokenization and stablecoins becoming increasingly integrated into traditional finance. Regardless of the outcome, Coinbase aims to expand its services into a broader financial platform that encompasses various asset classes.
