Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Stock Surges 115% — Is a 41% Rally Still Possible?
Key Takeaways
- Advanced Micro Devices shares have climbed 115% this year, though the stock retreated 2.4% on Tuesday amid market-wide selling pressure.
- The consensus analyst price target of $647.19 suggests approximately 41% additional upside potential from present trading levels.
- BMO Capital launched coverage with a Buy recommendation and $550 price objective; Raymond James elevated its rating to Strong Buy with a $641 target.
- The company’s Instinct MI355X AI platform has been deployed in Saudi Arabia, with expansion plans targeting 1 gigawatt of capacity by decade’s end.
- Ark Invest liquidated more than $92 million in AMD shares during late August, sparking questions about near-term price action.
The semiconductor giant delivered quarterly sales of $11.54 billion, representing a 50.1% increase compared to the prior-year period and exceeding Street expectations of $11.31 billion. Earnings per share reached $1.66, surpassing the analyst consensus of $1.62. Shares commenced trading at $459.61 on Wednesday, with the 52-week trading range spanning from $149.22 to $584.73.
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., AMD
Notwithstanding Tuesday’s modest decline, AMD remains among the top-performing semiconductor stocks in 2026, having appreciated 115% since January.
Wall Street Maintains Optimistic Outlook
BMO Capital analyst Harsh Kumar launched coverage with a Buy designation and $550 price objective. Kumar characterized the company as approaching status as “a complete AI infrastructure provider,” highlighting its comprehensive portfolio spanning GPUs, CPUs, and DPUs, along with the forthcoming Helios full-rack AI platform.
Scheduled for September 2026 delivery, Helios has already attracted attention from major technology firms including OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic.
Raymond James’ Simon Leopold adopted an even more bullish stance, elevating AMD to Strong Buy status with a $641 price target, raised from his previous $565 forecast. Leopold emphasized robust performance in the server processor segment and identified AMD as offering the most compelling blend of earnings growth potential, data center exposure, and competitive positioning among semiconductor stocks.
Leopold projects AMD’s data center division revenue will at minimum double throughout 2027, with the possibility of the company surpassing Intel in data center CPU sales by 2027 or 2028.
The Street’s aggregate rating stands at Strong Buy, supported by 28 Buy recommendations and 6 Hold ratings. The mean price target of $647.19 indicates potential appreciation of approximately 41% from current price levels.
Middle East Expansion and Shareholder Activity
AMD’s Instinct MI355X-powered AI infrastructure has commenced operations in Saudi Arabia through a collaboration with Cisco and HUMAIN. The consortium intends to deploy up to 250 megawatts of supplementary capacity beginning in 2027, with aspirations to reach 1 gigawatt by 2030.
Regarding institutional activity, Field and Main Bank established a fresh AMD stake during Q2, acquiring 19,373 shares valued at approximately $11.3 million. This purchase positioned AMD as the financial institution’s 13th-largest equity position. Institutional shareholders collectively control 71.34% of the company’s shares outstanding.
However, not all institutional movements favored the stock. Ark Invest divested 156,286 AMD shares for roughly $74.5 million on August 28, subsequent to disposing of 37,977 shares worth over $18 million on August 26.
Two company executives also executed stock sales in August through previously established Rule 10b5-1 trading arrangements. Executive Vice President Forrest Norrod sold 17,261 shares at $459.95 on August 24, while EVP Mark Papermaster offloaded 28,811 shares at $471.87 on August 20.
The stock currently trades at a price-to-earnings multiple of 118.15 and a PEG ratio of 4.87. Increasing Treasury yields have created headwinds throughout the chip sector, weighing on AMD alongside Nvidia and Intel.
AMD’s 50-day simple moving average registers at $502.84, compared to its 200-day moving average of $389.16. The semiconductor company commands a market capitalization of approximately $750 billion.
