Atlanta Fed Raises Q3 GDP Growth Estimate to 5.1%

The Atlanta Federal Reserve has increased its estimate for third-quarter real GDP growth to an annualized rate of 5.1%, a significant rise from the previous estimate of 4.4% made on September 10, 2026. This adjustment follows recent data releases from the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Treasury's Bureau of the Fiscal Service, which indicated stronger growth in personal consumption expenditures and government expenditures.

The updated GDPNow model reflects an increase in projected growth for real personal consumption expenditures from 3.6% to 4.1% and for real government expenditures from 1.3% to 2.3%. This robust growth comes at a critical time as the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is expected to announce a 25 basis point increase in the federal funds rate, with markets anticipating a 90% probability of this outcome.

While strong economic growth is typically viewed positively, the estimated 5.1% growth rate, driven by rising consumer spending, may also heighten inflationary pressures. This situation could lead the Federal Reserve to maintain a cautious stance regarding future policy support, reinforcing the rationale for the anticipated rate hike. The market will be closely watching the Fed's updated economic projections and guidance on potential future rate increases.
