BofA Identifies AI Confidence as Key Risk for US Equities

Bank of America (BofA) Global Research has highlighted a potential risk to US stock markets stemming from a possible loss of investor confidence in artificial intelligence (AI), a phenomenon they refer to as the "AI put." This term draws a parallel to the "Fed put," which describes the market's belief that central banks will intervene to support prices during downturns. BofA's strategists argue that current enthusiasm for AI is driving aggressive buying behavior among investors, overshadowing broader macroeconomic risks, particularly as the Federal Reserve prepares for another round of interest rate hikes.

Recent market trends illustrate this dynamic, with the top 20 performing stocks in the S&P 500, primarily in the technology and industrial sectors, adding approximately $1.7 trillion in market value since August 31. In contrast, the remaining 480 stocks in the index have collectively lost about $1.9 trillion. The narrowing of the market rally has put pressure on small and midcap stocks, as well as financials and utilities, which are more sensitive to rising bond yields that have reached multi-decade highs.

BofA cautions that while higher Treasury yields will eventually impact stock prices, the threshold for this effect may be higher than many investors anticipate. The firm emphasizes that the sustainability of the current bull market, which is nearing its fourth anniversary, largely hinges on maintaining investor confidence in AI. Analysts have noted a disparity in expectations regarding cash flows from AI investments, with technology analysts predicting significant growth by 2028, while those covering sectors that would utilize AI services remain more cautious. Should confidence in AI wane, it could exacerbate losses across the market amid an already uncertain economic environment.
