Brent Crude Prices Surge Following Iranian Missile Strikes

Brent crude oil prices increased by approximately one dollar during its regular overnight reopening on September 8, 2026, following missile strikes by Iran on U.S. bases in Jordan. This incident highlights the differing reactions of Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil benchmarks to geopolitical events, particularly those affecting the Middle East.

Brent, which is priced based on seaborne North Sea crude, is more sensitive to threats in Gulf shipping lanes and Middle Eastern supply disruptions. In contrast, WTI is priced off landlocked U.S. crude delivered at Cushing, Oklahoma, making it more insulated from Gulf-specific shocks and more influenced by domestic factors such as shale production and refinery demand.

The structural differences between the two benchmarks mean that traders seeking exposure to global shipping risks or Middle Eastern tensions typically prefer Brent, while those focused on U.S. supply dynamics lean towards WTI. The spread between the two contracts serves as a key metric, reflecting regional supply and logistics changes.
