China and U.S. Establish Trade Council and Extend Trade Truce to January 2027

China and the United States have agreed to form a China-U.S. Trade Council as part of their ongoing economic discussions, following the eighth round of trade talks. This new council will focus on establishing a reciprocal tariff-reduction framework, with an initial target of $300 billion on each side. The council's structure, responsibilities, and consultation arrangements have been agreed upon, with further details expected to be released in the coming months.

The trade truce between the two nations has been extended to January 2027, allowing both sides to evaluate the implementation of their current agreements and explore further enhancements to their economic relationship. China's Commerce Ministry indicated that high-level discussions may lead to additional extensions of the truce before the end of the year. An agriculture working group will also be created under the council, with its inaugural meeting scheduled before the close of 2026.

In addition to trade matters, the two countries have committed to establishing a communication channel for addressing artificial intelligence incidents and will continue discussions regarding increasing the number of flights between China and the U.S. The agreement reflects a mutual interest in fostering a stable and cooperative economic environment, with both sides expressing hopes for deeper collaboration in various sectors, including energy and financial services.
