Citigroup Upgrades Bitcoin (BTC) Forecast to $113K Following Record-Breaking Quarter

      Key Takeaways

      • Citigroup’s Alex Saunders increased his bitcoin price target from $82,000 to $113,000
      • BTC delivered its most impressive quarterly gains since 2024, surpassing gold’s performance
      • The digital asset was hovering around $84,784 on Thursday with minimal daily movement
      • Multi-year peaks in Treasury yields are creating headwinds for cryptocurrency valuations in Q4
      • Bull Theory analyst noted both BTC and ETH achieved their highest monthly closings of 2026

Citigroup has emerged as another major financial institution expressing bullish sentiment on bitcoin’s trajectory. The banking giant’s analyst, Alex Saunders, announced on Thursday an upward revision of his bitcoin price projection to $113,000, marking a significant increase from his previous $82,000 estimate.

According to Saunders, the revised forecast stems from a comprehensive analysis incorporating three critical components: trading activity patterns, broader economic trends, and capital flows into exchange-traded products.

The analyst emphasized that concerns over currency devaluation combined with fresh regulatory frameworks from the SEC have contributed to crypto’s recovery of important technical thresholds. This occurred despite the legislative setback when the Clarity Act didn’t advance through Congress.

      Exchange-Traded Fund Activity Drives Optimism

A significant factor in Saunders’ enhanced bitcoin projection involves the resurgence of capital entering ETF products. The analyst observed that institutional money began flowing back into these investment vehicles once bitcoin prices climbed above the critical 200-day moving average threshold.

The financial institution is now projecting approximately $5 billion in ETF inflows under its baseline scenario for the coming twelve months. This represents a notable departure from their earlier neutral stance on fund flows.

The leading cryptocurrency’s latest quarterly showing has eclipsed competing asset classes. Bitcoin recorded its most robust three-month period since 2024, outperforming the precious metal gold despite concurrent increases in government bond yields and various commodity valuations.

Market analyst Bull Theory provided context on the magnitude of this rally. “BREAKING: Bitcoin and Ethereum just printed their highest monthly close of 2026. $BTC surged +$25,800 and 44% in the past 3 months, delivering the best Q3 returns since 2017. $ETH surged 71.2% in the same period, its best quarter in history. Macro indicators confirm crypto has entered a new bull market,” the analyst stated.

However, the digital currency’s upward trajectory has decelerated as October commenced. Bitcoin was changing hands near $84,784 at 06:30 ET Thursday, reflecting minimal movement during the session.

Government Bond Yields Present Challenge for Digital Assets

Escalating Treasury yields have emerged as a significant obstacle for cryptocurrency markets entering the final quarter. Investors are positioning for potential additional monetary tightening from the Federal Reserve.

The flagship cryptocurrency had reached $85,600 during Wednesday’s trading session. This advance followed the release of U.S. PCE inflation figures that registered marginally below analyst projections.

The more moderate inflation reading sparked speculation that the central bank might adopt a less aggressive stance on future rate increases. However, these positive developments were partially neutralized by Treasury yields ascending to their highest levels in multiple years during the same trading period.

Alternative investment sectors have also diverted capital away from digital assets this week. Enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence developments, amplified by impressive quarterly results from Micron, channeled investor funds toward technology and semiconductor equities.

Market participants are now focused on Friday’s release of the U.S. nonfarm payrolls data for August. This employment report may provide additional insight into the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy direction.

Recent statements from a Federal Reserve official were interpreted as accommodative. This commentary diminished market expectations for a potential rate increase in October.

Additional prominent cryptocurrencies experienced downward pressure on Thursday. BNB, Ethereum, Cardano, XRP, and Dogecoin all registered losses in tandem with bitcoin’s subdued performance.
