US Manufacturing PMI Declines in September Amid Rising Prices

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) reported that the US manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for September registered at 54.5, slightly below the expected 55.0 and down from the prior reading of 54.6. The PMI is a key economic indicator that reflects the health of the manufacturing sector, with a reading above 50 indicating expansion.

New orders saw a notable increase, rising to 55.3 from 53.7 in the previous month. Employment also improved, climbing to 52.7 from 51.2. However, the prices paid index surged to 77.9, significantly higher than the expected 72.3 and up from 71.1 in August, indicating a sharp rise in inflationary pressures within the sector.

The immediate market reaction to the report saw US 30-year Treasury yields rise to 5.69%, marking the highest level of the day. This increase in yields is contributing to downward pressure on equity markets, as investors react to the inflation signals from the manufacturing sector. The ISM manufacturing PMI is a critical monthly report, providing insights into economic trends and influencing market dynamics.
