Nvidia (NVDA) Stock Approaches Record Territory With Major Events on Horizon

      Key Highlights

      • Nvidia shares advanced 0.8% during premarket hours to reach $230.19, remaining just under its record closing price of $235.74.
      • The stock has surged 22% year-to-date with an impressive 17% rally throughout Q3.
      • Wall Street anticipates Nvidia’s quarterly earnings release in the middle to latter part of November.
      • An anticipated November IPO from Anthropic may provide critical insights into AI infrastructure spending patterns for Nvidia chips.
      • A massive $150 billion stock repurchase program was greenlit by the board on September 28, pushing total buyback capacity to approximately $235 billion.

Nvidia stock registered a 0.8% increase during Thursday’s premarket session, reaching $230.19. This uptick positions the semiconductor giant tantalizingly close to its historic closing peak of $235.74 established on May 14.

The performance throughout 2026 has been remarkable. Shares have appreciated 22% since January, with the third quarter delivering a standalone 17% advance, based on data from Dow Jones Market Data.

Market participants are zeroing in on two significant developments as the year winds down. First up is Nvidia’s quarterly financial disclosure, anticipated to arrive during the mid-to-late November timeframe.

During its previous earnings call, Nvidia projected approximately 70% revenue expansion for fiscal 2028. This aggressive forecast has set high expectations, and shareholders will be watching closely to see if the momentum continues.

The second development carries substantial weight for the entire artificial intelligence sector. According to reporting from The Wall Street Journal, Anthropic—the organization responsible for the Claude AI assistant—is preparing for a November public offering.

Nvidia holds a significant stake in this equation. The company committed to a potential $10 billion investment in Anthropic last year, when the AI startup commanded a valuation around $350 billion, as reported by CNBC.

Current expectations place Anthropic’s public market debut valuation near the $2 trillion mark. A successful listing could alleviate concerns about the longevity of AI infrastructure investments and provide concrete evidence of demand for Nvidia’s semiconductor products.

Historical Performance Points to Strong Q4

Historical patterns suggest favorable conditions ahead. Since 1999, Nvidia’s shares have typically delivered their strongest performance during the fourth quarter, averaging gains of 22%.

Looking at more recent history, the last five years show an average Q4 appreciation of 17%. Whether 2026 will follow this established pattern is yet to be determined.

Nvidia appeared as a featured recommendation in Barron’s during May, when shares hovered around $226 with a forward P/E multiple of approximately 24 times earnings. That valuation metric has since compressed to roughly 17 times, per FactSet data.

      Capital Allocation and Trading Activity

From a corporate governance perspective, Nvidia’s board authorized a substantial $150 billion share repurchase initiative on September 28. This addition elevates the company’s aggregate buyback authorization to roughly $235 billion extending through fiscal 2028, representing approximately 2.8% of shares currently outstanding.

Buyback programs of this magnitude typically indicate management’s confidence that current share prices represent good value. The analyst community shares this optimism, maintaining a consensus “buy” recommendation with an average price objective of $324.14.

Concurrent with these developments, some insider transactions have occurred. Board member Mark Stevens divested 622,239 shares in early September at an average execution price of $231.62, while Executive Vice President Timothy Teter sold 30,460 shares later in the month at $222.80.

Throughout the previous 90-day period, company insiders have liquidated approximately $399.5 million in stock value, predominantly through scheduled trading arrangements. Institutional stakeholders maintain commanding ownership, controlling roughly 65% of all outstanding shares.

Nvidia’s most recent quarterly report, unveiled on August 26, exceeded analyst projections. The company delivered earnings of $2.22 per share compared to the consensus estimate of $2.09, alongside revenue of $96.22 billion versus forecasts of $92.27 billion—representing 106% year-over-year growth.

Additionally, Nvidia distributes a quarterly dividend of $0.25, most recently paid on October 1 to investors on record as of September 10. This translates to an annual dividend of $1.00 with a current yield of 0.4%.
