Nvidia (NVDA) Stock Gains as Trump Endorses AI Industry Self-Regulation
Key Highlights
- President Trump endorsed self-regulation for the AI industry during a Tuesday White House lunch, aligning with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s position.
- The meeting included no discussion of restricting data-center development or limiting chip availability, both critical to Nvidia’s growth strategy.
- Shares of Nvidia advanced 0.7% in Wednesday’s premarket session after the gathering.
- Rosenblatt Securities maintained its Buy recommendation with a $390 target price, suggesting significant upside from the $227.21 close.
- The chipmaker delivered quarterly earnings per share of $2.22, surpassing the $2.09 consensus, while revenue jumped 105.9% compared to the prior year.
Shares of Nvidia gained 0.7% in Wednesday’s premarket session following a favorable outcome from a Tuesday White House gathering. President Donald Trump expressed support for allowing the artificial intelligence sector to regulate itself during a lunch with technology industry leaders.
Among the attendees was Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who has consistently advocated for industry self-governance rather than extensive government intervention in AI development.
Also present was Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who has championed more rigorous regulatory frameworks for AI technologies, creating a notable contrast in viewpoints among participants.
President Trump resolved the discussion decisively, stating that “self regulation is very important” to the assembled executives.
In a casual aside, Trump also remarked that Huang was “a handsome guy” while positioned beside him, injecting a moment of levity into the otherwise serious gathering.
Executives at the meeting signed a commitment pledging to maintain AI safety standards through voluntary measures, including internal oversight mechanisms and independent assessments of AI systems.
Implications for Nvidia’s Growth Strategy
Notably absent from the discussion were any proposals to cap data-center expansion or impose restrictions on chip distribution for AI model training purposes.
This outcome is particularly favorable for Nvidia, whose business approach depends on widespread developer adoption of its technology platforms, a strategy reinforced by its acquisition of Hugging Face.
Joe Tigay from the Rational Equity Armor Fund outlined the company’s positioning, noting that Nvidia stands to profit regardless of whether industry leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic consolidate market share or the AI landscape fragments into numerous specialized models.
The Hugging Face acquisition provides Nvidia with strategic exposure to a more distributed AI ecosystem, serving as insurance against over-reliance on a concentrated group of dominant players.
Wall Street Outlook and Financial Performance
On Tuesday, Rosenblatt Securities confirmed its Buy rating on the stock with a $390 price objective, indicating potential appreciation of approximately 72% above the $227.21 closing price.
The consensus among Wall Street analysts remains overwhelmingly positive, with an average target of $324.14 across four Strong Buy recommendations, fifty Buy ratings, and a single Hold rating.
However, not all recent analyst actions have been upgrades. Wall Street Zen moved Nvidia from Strong Buy to Buy status this past Saturday.
The company’s latest quarterly results, released on August 26, exceeded analyst projections. Earnings per share reached $2.22 compared to the $2.09 estimate, while revenue totaled $96.22 billion against expectations of $92.27 billion.
The revenue figure represented a 105.9% increase year-over-year, with return on equity measuring 96.04%.
Earlier this week, Nvidia’s board approved an additional $150 billion share repurchase program, bringing the total remaining authorization to approximately $235 billion extending through fiscal 2028.
Recent insider activity has trended toward selling, with company insiders offloading approximately $399.5 million in shares during the past 90 days, including Director Mark A. Stevens’ September 4 transaction at an average price of $231.62 per share.
Institutional ownership remains substantial, with these investors controlling 65.27% of outstanding shares. Multiple large investment funds expanded their positions during the second quarter.
Over the past year, Nvidia’s stock has traded between a low of $164.27 and a high of $236.54, with current market capitalization at $5.48 trillion.
