Citigroup has chosen Coinbase as its technology partner to enable the banking giant’s enterprise customers to process stablecoin payments. This collaboration represents another milestone in bridging conventional banking infrastructure with cryptocurrency networks.

Under this arrangement, Coinbase supplies the blockchain infrastructure and stablecoin payment technology. Citigroup handles the settlement process and serves as the official banking institution.

Citi’s enterprise clients will gain the ability to process stablecoin payments during customer transactions through Citi’s existing merchant payment infrastructure. These stablecoins remain custodied at Coinbase and generate yield, currently set at 3.75% per year.

Shahmir Khaliq, who leads Citi’s services division, characterized the partnership as a crucial element in bridging digital currencies with conventional dollar-denominated financial systems. He referenced it as “completing that jigsaw puzzle.”

      Citi Broadens Blockchain Operations

Citigroup is simultaneously extending its tokenization services, enabling multinational corporations to transfer funds via the bank’s proprietary blockchain infrastructure 24/7. This capability has recently launched in Japan and the United Arab Emirates, expanding coverage to seven markets total.

Citigroup participates in a consortium of approximately 24 financial institutions developing a collaborative stablecoin initiative. The institution also operates a platform allowing high-net-worth individuals to trade private equity via blockchain technology.

The Coinbase collaboration comes following the Senate’s failure to advance the Clarity Act, legislation focused on cryptocurrency regulation. Khaliq indicated that Citigroup remains undeterred by this legislative delay, emphasizing the bank’s commitment to operating within existing regulatory frameworks.

Brett Tejpaul, who heads Coinbase Institutional, explained that the alliance seeks to enable seamless transitions between U.S. dollars and stablecoins while keeping users within the established banking infrastructure.

Wall Street Divided on COIN Outlook

William Blair confirmed its “outperform” recommendation, whereas Barclays slashed its target to $95 with an “underweight” designation.

Piper Sandler decreased its target to $146 accompanied by a “neutral” rating. Zacks Research elevated the stock from “strong sell” to “hold.”

Revenue totaled $1.22 billion, falling short of the $1.29 billion analyst consensus. Revenue declined 18.5% compared to the corresponding quarter in the previous year.

Insider transactions have been notable recently. CFO Alesia Haas divested 39,030 shares on September 21st at an average price of $205.24, generating proceeds exceeding $8 million.
