Corning (GLW) Stock Surges 7% on Verizon’s Multi-Billion Dollar Optical Fiber Agreement
Key Highlights
- Shares of Corning jumped more than 7% on Tuesday following Verizon’s announcement of a multi-billion dollar supply contract extending to 2032.
- Under the agreement, Corning will deliver over 80 million miles of high-density optical fiber to Verizon between 2027 and 2032.
- The contract enables Verizon’s broadband expansion initiatives and supports infrastructure for AI computing demands.
- This new contract strengthens a three-decade business relationship between the telecommunications giant and optical networking provider.
- The Verizon agreement marks another significant win for Corning in 2026, following contracts with Amazon, Meta, and a strategic investment from Nvidia.
Shares of Corning rallied more than 7% to approximately $165 on Tuesday following Verizon’s announcement of a long-term, multi-billion dollar supply contract with the optical networking specialist.
The agreement spans from 2027 through 2032. According to the terms, Corning will provide Verizon with over 80 million miles of high-density optical fiber along with comprehensive connectivity solutions.
Verizon outlined that the contract aims to broaden nationwide consumer broadband availability and bolster generative AI compute infrastructure. The telecommunications provider plans to reach between 40 and 50 million broadband passings, incorporating both fiber-to-the-home deployments and local business connectivity.
Kyle Malady, CEO of Verizon, stated the agreement enables the company to “continue building the network of the future at an unprecedented scale.” He emphasized that Verizon is constructing a converged architecture that integrates mobile and broadband capabilities while catering to AI hyperscalers.
The fiber network infrastructure will additionally function as a critical backbone linking data centers along major long-haul routes, representing a vital component of the ongoing AI infrastructure expansion.
Series of Major Contracts
The Verizon partnership represents the most recent in a sequence of substantial contracts secured by Corning. Last June, the company revealed a multi-billion dollar arrangement with Amazon for optical fiber production targeting data center applications.
In May, Nvidia committed an investment valued at up to $3.2 billion in Corning to enhance optical networking production capabilities in Texas and North Carolina facilities.
Earlier in January, Corning finalized a $6 billion agreement to provide Meta Platforms with cabling systems, optical fiber, and connectivity solutions for their data center operations.
The newly announced Verizon contract extends a 30-year collaborative partnership between these industry leaders. Products included in the agreement feature Corning’s Contour Flow Cable, which enables increased fiber deployment through pre-existing conduit infrastructure.
Mike O’Day, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Corning Optical Communications, expressed enthusiasm about strengthening the Verizon partnership and delivering optical innovations that connect AI data centers while broadening residential broadband accessibility.
Stock Market Response
Additional optical networking companies experienced gains alongside Corning on Tuesday. Ciena’s shares increased 1.9%, Coherent climbed 2.9%, and Lumentum advanced 2%. Verizon’s stock appreciated roughly 0.8% to reach $50.46.
Corning delivered second-quarter earnings results in late July that exceeded market expectations, although forward guidance fell somewhat short of analyst projections. CEO Wendell Weeks commented at that time that Corning was “entering a new phase of accelerating growth.”
The Verizon supply agreement substantiates that outlook, securing Corning with a multi-year revenue stream extending deep into the coming decade.
