Deutsche Bank CEO Warns of Political Extremism's Impact on German Investment

Christian Sewing, Chief Executive of Deutsche Bank, has expressed concerns that recent electoral successes for extreme political parties in Germany could deter foreign investment. In an interview with Bild, Sewing emphasized that foreign investors often do not differentiate between state governments and the country as a whole, making the political climate in individual states a significant concern for the national economy.

The warning follows notable victories for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which nearly secured an absolute majority in Saxony-Anhalt and won first place in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Additionally, the Left Party achieved its largest victory in Berlin, advocating for the expropriation of residential property companies to address rising housing costs. Sewing noted that these developments are not conducive to economic growth and could foster a climate that deters skilled workers and foreign capital.

Sewing urged Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government to persist with economic reforms, viewing them as essential to countering the influence of both right and left-wing extremists. As Germany's economy faces challenges in regaining momentum, the effectiveness and speed of these reforms are under scrutiny from investors concerned about the political landscape.
